Tower Crane, Rigging & Banksman

The Tower Crane, Rigging & Banksman course provides intensive training on the three most critical safety roles in lifting operations. This rapid, focused program covers legal requirements, load dynamics, the selection and inspection of lifting accessories, and the essential communication protocols between the crane operator and the ground crew. The training balances theoretical instruction on topics like load charts and hazard identification with practical application of slinging techniques and internationally recognised hand signals. It’s a comprehensive, condensed course engineered for maximum knowledge retention and immediate application in the field, helping to significantly mitigate the risk of accidents and ensure regulatory compliance on construction sites.

What I will learn?

• Rationale: The course addresses the critical industry need for certified, competent personnel in high-risk lifting operations. Untrained personnel are a major cause of construction accidents. This training is essential for adherence to local and EU Health and Safety at Work legislation which mandates that all lifting operations must be planned, supervised, and carried out by competent persons.
• Aims:
o To provide participants with a thorough understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Tower Crane Operator, Rigger/Slinger, and Banksman.
o To ensure competence in safe lifting practices, including load calculation, centre of gravity determination, and correct selection of lifting gear.
o To train participants in the universally accepted banksman (signaller) hand signals and communication protocols to guide crane movements safely.
o To promote a proactive safety culture and the ability to identify, assess, and mitigate hazards associated with lifting operations.

Requirements

This course is suitable for individuals who are currently working in or seeking employment in environments where heavy lifting is routinely performed. This includes, but is not limited to:
• New or Experienced Banksmen/Signallers and Riggers/Slingers.
• Tower Crane Operators (to refresh and confirm understanding of ground crew interaction).
• Construction Site Supervisors or Foremen responsible for overseeing lifting operations.
• Anyone involved in the planning, supervision, or execution of lifting operations on construction sites, ports, or industrial yards.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should generally meet the following criteria:
• Age: Be at least 18 years old.
• Health: Be certified as physically and medically fit (including eyesight and hearing) by a General Practitioner to perform the duties required of the role, especially the physical demands of slinging and signalling.
• Language: Be capable of reading, speaking, and understanding the English language sufficiently to communicate effectively on site.

Benefits Obtained:

• Participants shall be awarded a Certificate of Professional Competence in Tower Crane Rigging & Banksman.
Work-Based Learning
While the 6-hour format is typically classroom-intensive, the course would incorporate elements of simulated or practical work-based learning (WBL):
• Hands-on Practice: Practical sessions dedicated to rigging different types of loads, knot tying, and practicing banksman hand signals.
• Scenario-Based Assessment: Practical demonstration where the participant is required to direct a simulated or actual crane lift, inspect gear, and manage a lifting zone under supervision.
