Scaffolding & Working at Heights

The Scaffolding & Working at Heights course is a comprehensive, high-intensity program focused on mitigating the critical risks associated with working above ground level. Delivered over 6 hours for a total cost of 203 Euro, this training is designed to maximize learning efficiency and provide immediate, practical value to construction professionals.

What I will learn?

The Rationale for this programme is directly linked to the high incidence of serious accidents and fatalities in construction caused by falls from height in Malta and across Europe. Legislative compliance (e.g., Legal Notice 293 of 2016 in Malta, transposing EU directives) mandates that all personnel engaged in such work must receive appropriate and specific training.
The Aims are to:
• Ensure participants can identify, assess, and control hazards associated with working at height and scaffolding operations.
• Instil a culture of proactive safety planning and regulatory compliance.
• Provide practical skills in the correct use and pre-use inspection of access equipment and personal fall protection systems (PFPS).
• Minimize the risk of injury to workers and third parties from falls or falling objects

About Course

The Scaffolding & Working at Heights course is a comprehensive, high-intensity program focused on mitigating the critical risks associated with working above ground level. Delivered over 6 hours for a total cost of 203 Euro, this training is designed to maximize learning efficiency and provide immediate, practical value to construction professionals.
The curriculum covers key areas, including an in-depth review of Maltese Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) regulations concerning work at height, conducting mandatory risk assessments, and implementing the hierarchy of control measures (avoidance, prevention, mitigation). A major focus is placed on the safe erection, inspection, and dismantling of various types of scaffolding, as well as the correct selection, inspection, and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), particularly fall arrest and restraint systems. Delegates will learn to identify hazards like falls of people and objects, structural failure, and improper loading. This course is indispensable for achieving compliance, reducing accidents, and ensuring a competent workforce on site.
The Scaffolding & Working at Heights course, a joint initiative by the Malta Development Association (MDA) and the European Vocational Academy (EVA), is structured to deliver a high standard of occupational safety training relevant to the demanding construction sector.
This program has a duration of 6 Hours, is held in Malta, and costs 203 Euros; it is delivered in multiple languages through interpreter services, which are available upon request and subject to student numbers.

Benefits Obtained:

Upon successful completion, participants will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Knowledge pertaining to relevant Maltese and EU Work at Height legislation, various scaffolding types, the hierarchy of risk control measures, equipment selection, and basic emergency procedures; they will acquire the Skills to interpret and apply legal requirements, safely inspect scaffolding, conduct site-specific risk assessments, and correctly fit PPE; ultimately achieving the Competence to execute safe working practices and respond appropriately to emergencies in elevated work environments.
Although the 6-hour format is primarily classroom and practical-demonstration based, the principles learned are immediately transferable. The course content emphasizes real-world application of risk assessment and equipment use, bridging the gap between theory and safe on-site behavior. For employers, the certification provides proof of a worker’s competency, supporting the mandatory need for a competent person to carry out and supervise work at height.
