Rigging & Banksman

This intensive 4-hour certification course, Rigging & Banksman, is meticulously designed to equip lifting personnel, supervisors, and site managers with critical skills in safe load handling and communication. The program focuses on two essential roles: the Rigger/Slinger, who is responsible for the correct selection, inspection, and attachment of lifting accessories to the load; and the Banksman, who acts as the visual and verbal link between the crane/heavy equipment operator and the lifting area.

What I will learn?

The core competencies of the Rigging & Banksman course are structured around three pillars: safety, equipment mastery, and communication. Participants gain essential Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations, alongside understanding the specific characteristics and limitations of lifting accessories such as slings, shackles, and hooks. This theoretical basis enables them to develop key Skills, including identifying and mitigating potential hazards in the lifting zone, accurately performing pre-use inspections of all gear, and correctly estimating the load’s weight and center of gravity (CoG). Finally, the overarching Competences acquired allow the individual to apply safe systems of work, execute load attachments using various hitch configurations (like basket and choke), and maintain clear, unambiguous communication with the operator through recognized hand and radio signals (e.g., BS 7121), ensuring the secure, balanced movement of loads throughout every operation.

About Course

This intensive 4-hour certification course, Rigging & Banksman, is meticulously designed to equip lifting personnel, supervisors, and site managers with critical skills in safe load handling and communication. The program focuses on two essential roles: the Rigger/Slinger, who is responsible for the correct selection, inspection, and attachment of lifting accessories to the load; and the Banksman, who acts as the visual and verbal link between the crane/heavy equipment operator and the lifting area.
In a concise and high-impact format, participants will cover key areas including pre-use inspection of lifting gear, load weight estimation, identification of the center of gravity, selecting appropriate lifting techniques, and the mastery of standard hand and radio signals (BS 7121/international standards). Due to the condensed duration, this course emphasizes the fundamental principles of hazard identification, risk assessment, and adherence to relevant safety legislation. Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a certification recognizing their competence in coordinating and executing basic, safe lifting operations. The total course price is 145 Euro, offering exceptional value for essential workplace safety compliance.
This program has a duration of 4 Hours, is held in Malta, and costs 145 Euros; it is delivered in multiple languages through interpreter services, which are available upon request and subject to student numbers.

Course Curriculum

• Rationale: Lifting operations are among the highest-risk activities in industrial and construction sectors. Improper rigging, inadequate communication, or failure to inspect equipment are leading causes of critical and fatal accidents. This course is essential to mitigate these risks by professionalizing the Banksman and Rigger roles, ensuring legislative compliance, and fostering a culture of safety.
• Aims:
o To provide learners with the knowledge to select, inspect, and safely use common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, hooks).
o To train candidates to effectively and safely direct vehicle and crane movements using recognized hand and radio signaling techniques.
o To establish a clear understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and legal duties of personnel involved in lifting operations.
o To equip participants with the ability to carry out pre-lift risk assessments and adhere to safe systems of work.

Requirements

This course is ideally suited for all personnel who are directly involved in, or supervise, lifting and rigging operations. This includes:
• Riggers/Slingers
• Banksmen/Signallers
• Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operators
• Site Supervisors and Managers
• Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Professionals involved in planning or auditing lifting activities.
• General Workers involved in the movement and storage of loads.
Entry Requirements
• Age: Applicants must typically be at least 18 years old.
• Literacy/Numeracy: A basic level of English or Maltese literacy and numeracy is required to understand instructions, legislation, and perform simple load calculations.
• Physical Fitness: Candidates should be in good physical health, as the course may involve practical, hands-on activities related to handling lifting gear. A medical screening or self-declaration of fitness is sometimes required.
• PPE: Participants must have or bring their own suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as hard hat, safety boots, high-visibility vest/coveralls, and safety gloves.

Benefits Obtained:

While the core 4-hour course is classroom-based, the knowledge gained is immediately applicable to the workplace. Many institutions recommend that newly certified personnel work under supervision and maintain a Workplace Experience Logbook (if pursuing higher certification levels) to document their practical application of learned skills.
