Concrete Pump: Safe Use

Master the safe and compliant use of concrete pumping equipment with this vital 6-hour training program. Developed through the partnership of the MDA and the EVA, this course is the industry standard for reducing catastrophic risks associated with high-pressure concrete delivery.

What I will learn?

Given the short duration, work-based learning is integrated through live site specific training (using client equipment). This includes:
• Hands-on Inspection: Practical demonstration and execution of daily and weekly pre-use inspection checklists on actual pumping equipment.
• Setup: Scenario-based practicals focusing on the correct selection and placement of outrigger mats (cribbing) to manage ground loading and ensure pump stability.
• Emergency Drills: Walkthroughs of procedures for handling key emergencies, such as power line approach, pipe burst, and hydraulic failure.

About Course

Master the safe and compliant use of concrete pumping equipment with this vital 6-hour training program. Developed through the partnership of the MDA and the EVA, this course is the industry standard for reducing catastrophic risks associated with high-pressure concrete delivery.
The curriculum is engineered for immediate practical application, covering the crucial steps from planning to cleanup. You will gain expertise in systematic risk assessment, the proper deployment and stabilisation of pump outriggers, precise operation of the boom and pump controls, and the critical importance of maintaining safe working distances from overhead hazards. The course delivers focused instruction on pressure dynamics, identifying potential equipment failures before they occur, and coordinating operations effectively using standardized signals. Complete this program to validate your competency, achieve certification, and confidently contribute to a safer, more efficient construction site in Malta.
This program has a duration of 6 Hours, is held in Malta, and costs 203 Euros; it is delivered in multiple languages through interpreter services, which are available upon request and subject to student numbers.

Course Curriculum

Rationale: Concrete pumps are high-pressure, high-reach plant that pose severe, often fatal, risks if operated incorrectly (e.g., boom collapse, contact with power lines, and pipe/hose whip). The rationale for this concise 6-hour course is to provide personnel with essential, life-saving safety competencies that align with EU and national Maltese construction safety standards, immediately mitigating the most common on-site hazards.
Aims:
1. To equip personnel with the knowledge to plan and execute pumping operations that comply with all relevant local and European safety regulations.
2. To ensure operators and supervisors can correctly identify and safely address all major hazards, including unstable ground, overhead electricity cables, and pressure system malfunctions.
3. To certify that the operator is competent in performing pre-shift inspections and implementing emergency procedures for all equipment types (truck-mounted and static).

Requirements

The course targets key roles whose responsibilities directly impact the safety of pumping operations:
• New and Experienced Concrete Pump Operators seeking formal certification or renewal.
• Construction Site Supervisors and Project Managers responsible for overseeing concrete placement.
• Signallers/Banksmen who coordinate the pump operator’s movements.
• Construction Safety Officers who need detailed knowledge of concrete pumping risk control.
Entry Requirements
The following requirements are standard across major European training bodies to ensure the participant can safely benefit from the instruction:
• Minimum Age: 18 years old.
• Literacy/Language: Adequate proficiency in the language of instruction (e.g., English or Maltese) to comprehend complex safety instructions, risk assessments, and pass the required tests.
• Safety Awareness: A basic understanding of construction site safety is highly recommended. EVA Level 2 Health and Safety in Construction is recommended.
• Physical Fitness: Medically fit to perform the duties of the role, particularly regarding eyesight, hearing, and reflexes required for boom and pressure control.

Material Includes

Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments, participants will be awarded a:
• Certificate of Competence: Concrete Pump: Safe Use of Concrete Pump(Issued by the Malta Development Association (MDA) in collaboration with the European Vocational Academy (EVA))
This certificate validates the operator’s fundamental competence and adherence to safety protocols for operating concrete pumps.

Benefits Obtained:

As a collaborative course between a national development body (MDA) and a European training provider (EVA), the quality assurance mechanism ensures that the training is robust and nationally recognised.
• Standard Alignment: Course content aligns with technical guidance from leading associations and adapted for Maltese regulations.
• Assessment: Participants are assessed through a mandatory final evaluation comprising a written/verbal theory test on safety protocols and a practical observation of key setup and operational skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Competences
The course is designed to transfer three core competencies: Knowledge of legislative requirements and equipment mechanics; Skills in safe setup, operation, and cleanout; and the ability to demonstrate Competence under pressure. Participants will master pre-use checks, site-specific risk assessment, and safe stabiliser deployment to prevent boom tip-overs. They will be skilled in controlling high-pressure systems and addressing blockages safely. The ultimate competence gained is the ability to consistently plan and execute concrete delivery, especially near overhead power lines, ensuring zero harm to personnel and property.
