Mobile Crane, Rigging & Banksman

Welcome to the comprehensive Mobile Crane, Rigging & Banksman course! In the dynamic fields of construction, logistics, and engineering, the safe and efficient movement of heavy loads is paramount. This specialized training is designed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to perform critical lifting operations with the highest safety standards.

What I will learn?

Programme Rationale and Aims
• Rationale: The programme addresses the critical industry need for competent and certified personnel in lifting operations to comply with international and regional safety regulations, such as those related to the safe use of lifting equipment. Mishaps in lifting operations are a leading cause of serious workplace accidents; this training aims to mitigate risk through specialized knowledge and skill development.
• Aims:
o To provide delegates with a comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory framework governing mobile crane, rigging, and signalling activities.
o To equip participants with the skills to safely and efficiently prepare, sling, and signal the movement of loads using a mobile crane.
o To foster a proactive safety culture by enabling participants to conduct pre-use equipment inspections, identify hazards, and implement effective risk control measures.

About Course

This intensive, one-day Mobile Crane, Rigging & Banksman training offers a focused blend of theoretical principles and practical application essential for anyone involved in lifting and load movement activities. The course is structured to provide the core competencies needed to safely direct, prepare, and execute non-complex lifts using a mobile crane.
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of relevant safety legislation, hazard identification, and risk assessment specific to crane operations. Key modules include learning about different types of mobile cranes, assessing load weight and center of gravity for safe rigging, selecting and inspecting lifting accessories (slings, shackles, etc.), and mastering standard international hand and radio communication signals used by a Banksman/Signaller. Upon successful completion, delegates will be able to perform these roles competently, significantly reducing the risk of accidents, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance on job sites in the construction, industrial, and logistics sectors.
This program has a duration of 8 Hours, is held in Malta, and costs 140 Euros; it is delivered in multiple languages through interpreter services, which are available upon request and subject to student numbers.

Course Curriculum

The specific award granted upon successful completion of the course and its final assessment (often a combination of theoretical exam and practical assessment) would typically be:
• Certificate of Competence or Award in Tower Crane Rigging & Banksman.

Requirements

This course is ideally suited for:
• New and Inexperienced Personnel aiming to start a career in construction, engineering, logistics, or offshore industries involving lifting operations.
• Existing Workers (such as Riggers, Slingers, Crane Operators, or Ground Workers) needing to formalize or update their skills and obtain a recognized certificate of competence for Banksman and Rigging roles.
• Supervisors and Managers who oversee lifting operations and require foundational knowledge to manage and plan safe systems of work.
Entry Requirements
• Minimum Age: Typically 18 years old.
• Literacy and Numeracy: A fundamental level of reading, writing, and mathematical ability is required to understand instructions, interpret load charts/documents, and complete assessments.
• Physical Fitness: Candidates should be in good physical health, as the role may involve manual handling, climbing, and working outdoors or in industrial environments. A medical fitness certificate may be required by some employers.
• Language: Proficiency in the language of instruction (e.g., English) is essential.
• Prior Experience: While often suitable for novices, some institutions may require familiarity with site operations or crane activities.

Material Includes

While the 6-hour format is typically classroom-intensive, the course would incorporate elements of simulated or practical work-based learning (WBL):
• Hands-on Practice: Practical sessions dedicated to rigging different types of loads, knot tying, and practicing banksman hand signals.
• Scenario-Based Assessment: Practical demonstration where the participant is required to direct a simulated or actual crane lift, inspect gear, and manage a lifting zone under supervision.
