What I will learn?

Upon completing this course, the learner will have acquired the following:
Knowledge
• Legal Obligations: General knowledge of the key provisions of Maltese OHS law (e.g., the Health and Safety at Work Act) relevant to the construction industry.
• Hazard Identification: Knowledge of common hazards and risks on site (e.g., working at heights, electrical risks, confined spaces, moving machinery).
• Risk Mitigation: Understanding the principles of the hierarchy of controls (eliminate, substitute, engineering, administrative, PPE).
Skills
• Hazard Spotting: The ability to visually inspect a workplace and identify potential risks and hazards.
• PPE Application: Skill in selecting, correctly using, and maintaining appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Safety Procedures: The ability to apply basic occupational safety procedures in daily tasks.
Competences
• Safety Adherence: Demonstrating the autonomy to follow site rules, procedures, and legal requirements with minimal supervision.
• Reporting: Competence in reporting incidents, accidents, and near-misses using appropriate site documentation.
• Self-Responsibility: Taking personal responsibility for their own health and safety, and not endangering others.
Work-Based Learning (WBL)
While this is typically a short awareness course and may not include a formal WBL placement component, the training is heavily focused on real-world construction scenarios and practical examples. The learning experience aims to:
• Use case scenarios and work examples throughout the course to ground theoretical knowledge in site reality.
• Encourage learners to immediately apply the safety principles and procedures learned back in their actual work environment.

About Course

This comprehensive 10-hour course, delivered by the European Vocational Academy (EVA), is essential training for all personnel involved in the construction industry, including developers, site managers, supervisors, and workers. It is designed to provide participants with the foundational knowledge and practical application skills necessary to comply with Maltese and EU safety legislation and maintain a safe working environment.
The curriculum focuses on risk identification and mitigation across typical construction hazards, including working at heights, manual handling, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and understanding site-specific emergency procedures.
Participants will learn how to:
• Identify and assess common workplace hazards.
• Implement effective control measures and preventative action.
• Foster a culture of responsibility and safety adherence on site.

Course Curriculum

This course is primarily aimed at personnel whose roles involve working on or managing construction sites, or those responsible for site safety. This includes:
• Developers and Real Estate Professionals.
• Construction Workers (including those seeking the BICC Health and Safety Card).
• Site Managers, Supervisors, and Foremen.
• Health and Safety Representatives.
• Any individual requiring a basic level of health and safety awareness before visiting or working in a construction environment.

Requirements

• Age: Applicants should generally be 18 years of age or older.
• Prior Knowledge: No formal qualifications are typically required, as this is a foundational awareness course. However, a basic understanding of English and/or Maltese may be necessary to fully engage with the course materials and assessment.
